PREVENTCD project gathers data on infant celiac disease

The international PreventCD project has compiled research data on celiac disease with the goal of developing a primary prevention strategy for at-risk infants. The project includes studies on breast-feeding, gluten introduction, weaning and probiotics. Though much of the data is inconclusive, the research suggests that breast-feeding confers some protection against celiac disease, and small quantities of gluten may be introduced when the infant is between 4 months and 7 months old, but only if the infant is being breast-fed.
