Artificial pancreas improves condition of type 1 diabetes patient

A fully automated artificial pancreas has offered new hope for Thomas Brobson, a 53-year-old patient with type 1 diabetes. The experimental device involves a computer algorithm that connects to a glucose sensor and an insulin pump that interface with each other to mimic a healthy pancreas. Similar devices are being developed by companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic. After receiving the device last year as part of a three-day trial, Brobson said he slept soundly through the night without worries that his blood sugar would dip too low. "I felt like I was getting a glimpse of what a cure would be like," he said.
