Celia Israel, an out lesbian running for a seat in the Texas House, on Tuesday advanced to a runoff election in the race to replace former Democratic Rep. Mark Strama. Israel, a Democrat, came in second place with 32% of the vote, with Republican Mike VanDeWalle finishing first with 39%. Israel defeated two other Democrats to advance to the runoff, which is expected to take place in January or February. "I'm relieved, I'm honored, and I look forward to rallying Democratic supporters and working to keep this a good progressive seat," Israel said on election night.
