S&P retains India's rating but issues warning

Standard & Poor's is maintaining India's sovereign rating but with a negative outlook and a warning that a downgrade to less than investment grade could be forthcoming if the next government doesn't produce a sound economic plan. Among India's weaknesses cited by S&P are "an onerous burden from its public finance, lack of progress on structural reforms, and shortfalls in basic services typical of a nation with a GDP per capita of $1,500."
