Work on $1.6B Chicago-St. Louis HSR project on track

Construction of the $1.6 billion high-speed rail route between Chicago and St. Louis is on schedule, and many individual construction projects associated with it are underway. During the project's first three years, enhancements to the existing rail line -- to upgrade it to high-speed -- included renewing more than 200 crossings, spreading more than a million tons of ballast and installing 626,000 new concrete ties. Work is expected to be finished by 2017. This piece looks at some of the challenges in coordinating a project of this size.
