Although the field of bio-inspiration in science and engineering is a bit fuzzy and hard to define, some hard-and-fast results are being realized, writes Bruce Bigelow. Recent examples include bio-inspired nano-scale photonics based on a South African plant, a nimble six-legged robot that mimics the efficient scuttling motion of cockroaches and bacteria-thwarting coatings that duplicate the microbe-resistant surface of sharkskin.
