Gulf states urged to update building codes

Lawmakers and insurance representatives urged Gulf Coast states to adopt more comprehensive building codes, after learning that much of the hurricane damage there could have been prevented if stricter regulations had been in place. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, introduced legislation asking Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to "adopt comprehensive, modern and uniform statewide building codes," while the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America proposed rewarding states that upgrade their codes with federal aid.
