Carriers raise holiday fares, United adds surcharge to offset fuel cost

Some carriers are boosting holiday fares, they say to partly offset the soaring price of jet fuel. United Airlines this week added a fuel surcharge to most of its domestic flights. However, some observers noted that today's fares are lower than fares in 2000 when adjusted for inflation.
