Berkeley, Calif., landscape designer Bernardo Lopez helped food-production expert and professor Michael Pollan transform his California garden into a vibrant social space with raised beds that produce vegetables. Lopez laid a black basalt stone patio to give the space structure and used an existing cement wall to anchor a sitting area. Pathways made of crushed granite allow visitors to walk easily around the beds. Nearly every remaining square foot of the garden is covered with drought-resistant plants.
