Md. county shows small gains in diversifying teacher workforce

Recently released data shows that officials in a Maryland county have slightly increased the diversity of their teaching pool as part of an effort to better reflect the diversity of the county's students. According to the data, 20.6% of last year's new hires were minorities, compared with 17.6% two years earlier. A higher percentage of male teachers were hired last year as well. It is believed that students relate better to teachers who look like them, officials said.
