Senators push for a gas tax to cut deficit, fund infrastructure

U.S. Sens. Tom Carper, D-Del., and George Voinovich, R-Ohio, are asking President Barack Obama's debt commission to look at increasing gas taxes 25 cents per gallon, with 10 cents of the increase going to help cut the deficit and 15 cents used to pay for transportation infrastructure improvements. The senators say the tax could be increased by 1 cent per month for 25 months. The proposal will probably face Republican opposition, as many GOP lawmakers ran against raising taxes.
