Air pollution exposure ups risk of rheumatoid arthritis in studies

Exposure to sulfur dioxide increased the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, according to two studies being presented today at an American College of Rheumatology meeting. Although a Swedish study linked increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis to exposure to sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, U.S. researchers found that only sulfur dioxide was tied to modest increases in risk. The findings were based on the outcomes of 2,092 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and more than 93,000 people without the condition in Sweden and the U.S.
