How the HTML "picture" element will work

A group of W3C-affiliated developers have put together a demonstration page explaining how the new HTML "picture" element will work. The most obvious application for the element is serving appropriately sized images to users with varying screen sizes, but the element can also be used for responsive image cropping, or even to swap images based on device usage.
