Math wars embroil one New York district

In Penfield, N.Y., parents outraged over their children's inability to do basic math calculations petitioned the school board to offer an optional traditional math curriculum. While school officials say their "constructivist" math approach had helped boost math scores, the district has also opted to offer more computation lessons and remedial help.
