Experts: Adding algae to federal mandate will help biofuels sector

A Senate measure to broaden the 2007 energy mandate by changing the requirement of cellulosic ethanol to "advanced green biofuels" is expected to spur investment into algae fuel. The move could allow algae-derived fuel to get a slice of 16 billion gallons in production mandated by 2022 that is currently allotted to fuels based on cobs, wheat straw and other biomass. Expanding the target will benefit the biofuel sector because "Congress generally creates problems for the industry it aims to support -- not to mention itself -- when it picks winners," said Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., chairman of the energy panel.
