Louisiana center uses technology to monitor highways

A $14.5 million complex in Louisiana is dedicated to using Intelligent Transportation Systems, or ITS, to create more efficient and safer highways. Operators at the center will monitor data collected by sensors located along major state highways. "The answer isn't to continue expanding and building new highways," noted Steve Strength, traffic engineer for the state Department of Transportation and Development in New Orleans. "We have to learn how to operate the highways we have more efficiently, and that's where ITS comes in."
