Study finds variation in surveillance practices of hospitals

A review of surveillance practices in four hospitals showed a wide variation in the interpretation and implementation of the National Healthcare Safety Network -- a Web-based program used to track health care-related infections. "Inconsistent surveillance practice ... threatens the validity of the metric used by both funding agencies and the public to compare hospitals," researchers said.
