The continuing strain between clients and agencies was the topic of an recent industry event. Tom Cunniff, interactive vice president for Combe, said that clients sometimes neglect their leadership role in the process of presenting the company. Draftfcb's Rich Gagnon said that friction arises from not properly agreeing on strategy. Possible Worldwide's Baron Conway agreed that clients sometimes enlist agencies without a "coherent strategy." PepsiCo's Josh Karpf said that client executives facing digital innovation "have an inherent fear about being outdated."
