Osteosarcoma diagnosis forces tough decisions

Osteosarcoma is a painful bone cancer of dogs that carries a poor prognosis, and when veterinarian Jeff Kahler's golden retriever patient, Dolly, had a tumor in her leg, he recommended biopsy with surgical removal of the limb, or euthanasia. Dr. Kahler admits that owners often struggle with the idea of a pet's limb amputation, but he notes that removing the limb removes pain and enhances the pet's quality of life.
