Aside from the stronger restrictions endorsed last month by the FDA for prescription painkillers, doctors must also do their part in controlling the abuse of such perfectly lawful medications, according to this editorial. Doctors should be in the forefront of the fight against abuse, the editorial says. The problem is tricky, because many patients legitimately need these medications, and state prescription monitoring programs intended to curb doctor-shopping are one of the best fixes available, according to the editorial.
