Vitamin D benefits kidney transplant patients, study finds

Vitamin D supplementation soon after kidney transplantation may improve patient outcomes, according to research presented at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week. In the study that involved 264 kidney transplant recipients, researchers found that vitamin D was directly associated with how well the kidney filtered blood in the years after transplant, and that those with lower levels of vitamin D were more likely to experience kidney function decline, rejection episodes and death.
