Analysis: ICD-10 medical-coding system switch

The government's plan for a new ICD-10 system for health care billing -- which will boost the number of medical codes tenfold to 155,000 -- will allow for more detail on a patient's condition, which could boost health IT efforts, and also will help track disease outbreaks. However, some groups are urging an extension in the implementation deadline to address expected problems with billing errors and added associated time and costs.
