At least one resident of New York's Essex County has taken to rowing across Lake Champlain now that the bridge spanning the lake between Crown Point, N.Y., and Chimney Point, Vt., is closed. Some lawmakers say closing the bridge, which was declared too unstable to be repaired, is hurting businesses and isolating communities because the detour for the bridge is 80 miles away. Michael Sweeney, who delivers the local newspaper, now crosses the river in a boat. "I don't feel like waiting for the ferry, so I decided for now I'm just going to row across. It's only about half a mile," Sweeney said.
