Installing solar power at home can yield savings

Scientific American readers submitted stories of installing solar energy at home, and the rebates or other payback received for each project. Don Cruse in California powers his entire home with solar energy, and has received $20,000 in rebates over five years. Meanwhile, a couple in New York thinks its system will pay for itself in 13 years -- and after rebates and tax credits will have cost less than $10,000.
