The stereotype of IT workers being more interested in demonstrating their skills than helping co-workers still holds a kernel of truth, writes Mike Schaffner. IT departments exist chiefly to help employees access and use their company's systems and data -- a task that requires interpersonal skills as much as technical ones, he argues. IT managers need to start hiring with this broader skill set in mind, he writes.
