A red palm weevil appears in Laguna Beach, Calif.

A Southeast Asian pest that can kill palm trees has been found in Laguna Beach, Calif. The red palm weevil starts the destruction of palm trees by laying eggs at its crown, where its larvae will be near the plant's young leaves -- which they use as food supply. There is no known treatment to get rid of the weevils; however, early detection can help palms recover from an infestation.
