Chicago schools could ban sale of low-nutrition drinks

Chicago Public Schools is considering a new wellness policy that would, among other things, ban the sale of sports drinks, carbonated water, whole milk, soft drinks, vitamin-water drinks and energy drinks during school hours. Under the proposed policy, school fundraisers still could include the sale of candy. Food rewards, such as cupcakes, would be allowed but discouraged. Each school also would establish a "wellness team" to help with implementing the policy, which is up for a vote this week.
