With PHOs under fire, nutritionists highlight the benefits of natural fats

Natural fats, such as olive oil, butter and lard are getting a second look in light of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's preliminary determination that trans fats are no longer "generally recognized as safe." The key is limiting amounts and choosing the most healthful options, some nutritionists say. A 2009 meta-analysis already discredited theories that saturated fats are harmful to heart health, finding "no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD (coronary heart disease) or CVD (cardiovascular disease)."
