Process uses solar energy, rust to create hydrogen

Researchers are using what amounts to rust and solar energy to produce hydrogen, in an effort to produce an alternative fuel source. The Robert Palumbo of Valparaiso University and his colleagues take a form of iron ore called hematite and heat it with solar energy to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit inside a reactor remove the oxygen molecules, transforming the ore to magnetite, which is mixed with water and acid and exposed to a lower electrical current to produce the hydrogen. The process converts the magnetite back to hematite, which can be used in the process again.
