Online ad spending by the pharmaceutical industry

According to eMarketer's upcoming Pharmaceutical Industry Online report, data from Advertising Age shows that each of the top ten pharmaceutical industry advertisers spent less than 1.0% of their total ad budgets on Internet-based advertising during 2002. Collectively, the leading pharmaceutical industry advertisers spent just $41.6 million on online advertising in 2002. By comparison, the 10 leading retail industry advertisers spent $117.8 million on Internet-based advertising last year -- almost three times as much as their counterparts in the pharmaceutical industry. On the other hand, when compared with their online ad spending in 2001, most pharmaceutical companies have increased their online advertising spending as a percentage of their total ad budgets in 2002, with several companies more than doubling the portion of their total ad budgets that they have channeled online. www.emarketer.com
