Restaurants drive redevelopment, one storefront at a time

It has taken decades to redevelop some of the streets south of Columbia University in New York City, but a push toward small-scale development has brought a variety of diverse food businesses into the area in recent years. The area now boasts 70 sit-down restaurants, up from 45 a decade ago, with independent eateries including Vietnamese, Indian and burger joints in the lead. "Restaurants can set a tone for a neighborhood, give them a certain look and feel," said Robert Nelson, president of the Nelson Management Group.
