Starbucks must pay almost $2.8B in Kraft contract case

An arbitrator has ordered Starbucks to pay Mondelez International $2.23 billion in damages and $527 million in interest and attorney fees resulting from a contract dispute. The disagreement stems from Starbucks' 2011 decision to prematurely end a distribution deal with Kraft Foods, which has since divided into Mondelez and Kraft Foods Group. Starbucks alleged that Kraft wasn't doing enough to promote the brand; Kraft disagreed and demanded fair payment for the contract, which was generating $500 million in annual revenue.
