U.N. begins massive Mideast polio vaccination effort

In response to outbreaks in Syria, the United Nations has launched its largest-ever Mideast vaccination campaign against polio and other communicable diseases, targeting more than 20 million children in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza, Syria and Turkey. UNICEF hopes to have as many as 1.7 billion doses of oral polio vaccine by the end of the year, said Ala Alwan, World Health Organization regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean.
