Volunteer mapmakers help with rescue efforts in the Philippines

Hundreds of volunteers are building a free online map of the Philippines using OpenStreetMap to help the Red Cross and other aid organizations plan their relief efforts. The crowdsourced map works by allowing volunteers to trace roads and buildings that appear in satellite imagery onto the OpenStreetMap version. The map uses imagery from before Typhoon Haiyan, however, so rescuers are still awaiting information from the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to compare the landscape before and after the storm.
