Will robotic system become the new normal for angioplasty?

Robot-assisted angioplasty systems show potential as a means for shielding physicians from radiation exposure while enhancing stent placement. The CorPath System, demonstrated at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics meeting, allows interventional cardiologists to use a robotic arm to place stents from behind a protective cockpit. The company says doctors were able to reach proficiency after three cases during system trials; however, it's not clear whether cost concerns will impede adoption of the technology.
