Harvesting rainwater may eventually become a common practice in California. The state Department of Public Works' Bureau of Sanitation and local governments are experimenting with ways to capture rainwater before it enters sewage systems. For example, in Los Angeles, 600 trial rain barrels were given away, and in Orange County, a rain garden with an underground cistern that will recycle rainwater recently opened. Meanwhile, Santa Monica is experimenting with ways to capture street runoff.
