Economist Monti moves to form Italian government

Negotiations to form an Italian government headed by economist Mario Monti are expected to be completed by Wednesday. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano asked Monti, a former member of the European Commission, to put together a government less than 24 hours after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi resigned. The government's first challenge will be to implement spending cuts and reform aimed at balancing Italy's budget by 2014.
