Doctors: Consolidation, quality top U.S. health care issues

Top challenges in U.S. health care include industry consolidation, increasing demands to measure quality and the marginalization of the patient, physician researchers told a media briefing hosted by The Journal of the American Medical Association, which was accompanied by a Special Communication published in the journal. Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel of the University of Pennsylvania said to reduce costs, health care must be transformed to improve care for the chronically ill patients who make up 10% of the population but consume almost two-thirds of health care dollars.
