Food industry backs voluntary GMO labeling standards

Key food industry players are pushing for a national voluntary labeling system for foods containing genetically modified ingredients. The proposal calls for a definition of natural and mandatory labels for products derived from GMO plants that have been found to pose health risks, of which there are none to date. "There is no material difference between genetically engineered ingredients and their conventional counterparts," said Louis Finkel, executive vice president for government affairs at the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
