HHS reports lower-than-expected ACA enrollment in first month

The White House announced Wednesday that approximately 106,000 people signed up in insurance plans nationwide during the first month of the Affordable Care Act's open enrollment, which is well short of its early target of about 500,000. Nearly 27,000 enrolled using the federal exchange, while the other 79,000 signed up using exchanges run by states and the District of Columbia. "We expect enrollment will grow substantially throughout the next five months, mirroring the pattern that Massachusetts experienced. They're also numbers that will grow as the website, HealthCare.gov, continues to make steady improvements," HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said.
