Honda Accord Hybrid keeps transmission simple to achieve high mileage

Honda's new Accord Hybrid achieves 50 miles per gallon in city driving in part with a unique transmission that essentially has one speed, writes David Reichmuth, a senior engineer at Clean Vehicles. The gasoline engine connects with the drive wheels only at highway speeds, when power beyond what the electric motor can provide is necessary, he explains.
