Poll: 4 in 5 U.S. teens who misuse pain meds are seeking pain relief

The desire to relieve discomfort is what motivates most teens who misuse prescription narcotic drugs, according to a poll published in The Journal of Pain. University of Michigan researchers surveyed approximately 3,000 teens and found that 30% of the respondents who did not take the drugs as instructed and 47% of those who used another individual's medication also took the painkillers for other reasons, including getting high. The study also revealed that girls and blacks were more likely to abuse painkillers than boys and whites.
