Trapped remnants of ancient sea lies under Chesapeake Bay

An aquifer deep under the Chesapeake Bay is part of an ancient sea that's been trapped there for about 145 million years, researchers say. Normally, underground channels help such reservoirs drain away, but a meteorite that smashed into the area about 35 million years ago destroyed those channels and locked the water in place, according to a study published in the journal Nature.
