U.S. has had fewer tornadoes than average in 2013

With the exception of a stormy period in the spring, tornado activity in the U.S. has been relatively low this year, according to data from the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla. In an average year, the country experiences more than 1,250 of the storms, but only about 800 tornadoes had been reported as of the end of last month. "The U.S. experiences about 80% to 90% of all of the tornadoes that occur across the world," said Arizona State University geographer Randy Cerveny.
