Effective math instruction includes reasoning, problem-solving, multiple ways to represent an idea and questioning, according to Stanford University researcher Jo Boaler. In this blog post, she notes that the Common Core State Standards are a step in the right direction, especially since students must justify their answers. "Justification and reasoning are two of the acts that lie at the heart of mathematics. They are, in many ways, the essence of what mathematics is," Boaler writes.
