Buffalo, N.Y., Layoffs Target Newest Teachers First

The recent layoffs of 433 teachers in the Buffalo, N.Y., school district have robbed students of some of the most promising young teachers in the system, as most out-of-work teachers probably will seek employment outside the district, critics have said. Additionally, the job cuts could hurt the district's future efforts to recruit new teachers, who may be reluctant to consider Buffalo schools.
