Breaking up legal union can be hard to do

Although only a handful of states offer marriage, civil unions or domestic partnership rights to same-sex couples, the existence of these legal unions is raising complex questions about what happens when a couple separates, especially if one or both partners has moved to a state that doesn't recognize their relationship. The law is still relatively untested in this area, but legal experts say it's simplest to end a union in the state in which it started.
