Qualcomm quits UMB to focus on next-gen LTE tech

With demand for handsets slumping, Qualcomm has called off its development of Ultra Mobile Broadband technology and issued a small round of layoffs, the company told analysts Thursday. Instead of next-generation UMB, the chip maker -- which predicted a "modest" market rebound in late 2009 -- will focus on developing Long Term Evolution, a so-called "fourth generation" wireless standard backed by such major clients as Verizon Wireless.
