Exec deems IOM report a "notable contribution" to patient safety

The Institute of Medicine report on EHR safety concerns is "a notable contribution" to patient safety initiatives, said Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society President and CEO H. Stephen Lieber. However, Lieber also stressed the value of health IT over the dangers to patient health that can be caused by paper-based records. To prevent patient safety errors, EHR usability should be aligned with clinical workflows and all stakeholders should be involved in the testing process, he said.
