Michael Becker became a standout foreign language student since high school in Connecticut, where he learned French, Spanish and Italian. After learning Chinese at Princeton University, Becker and 13 other students gathered in New York for the Hong Kong Cup Chinese Speech Contest. Becker credited the win to the two months spent in Beijing, during which he pledged to classmates he would speak only Chinese. The victory earned him a free trip to Hong Kong.
